Description of the role:

We seek someone to take over from our existing Treasurer, who is retiring from the position. This is a really exciting moment to be joining Open Country, at a time of significant expansion in our award-winning work, helping disabled people to access and enjoy the countryside.

Working with the Chief Officer, book-keepers and Board of Trustees, your responsibilities will include:
• Ensuring that the organisation’s finances are responsibly managed.
• Monitoring the financial performance of the charity and reporting to the Board and Chief Officer at Board and Finance Sub-Committee meetings.
• Overseeing the financial affairs of the organisation and ensuring they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
• Liaising with the external book-keepers. In conjunction with the external book-keepers, reviewing and / or preparing monthly management accounts.
• Annually reviewing the organisation’s ‘Finance Policy and Procedures’.
• Liaising with the Chief Officer on the production of an annual budget.
• Ensuring all strategic plans are financially appraised and budgets are aligned to both short-term and long-term objectives.
• Liaising with external independent examiners on financial accounts.
• Guiding fellow trustees to formally approve the annual report and accounts.

The role is very flexibly and can be expedited a any time in the week, however trustee meetings are normally on held on Wednesdays.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

Financial literacy is essential and an Accountancy qualification, with at least three years' experience would be highly desirable.

Practical information:

The role will require approximately four hours per week, primarily from home but also with some attendance at trustee meetings and with other parties.

Open Country is a charitable organisation. We aim to enable anyone with a disability to access and enjoy the countryside. We run a range of activity groups including, walking, cycling, outdoor pursuits, practical conservation work and nature study. We also run a countryside access advice service and produce a number of countryside access publications.

Open Country’s Breakfree packs for Harrogate District and Wharfedale are easy access routes which can be enjoyed by children, cyclists and people with disabilities, including wheelchair users. The packs have clear, colour maps for each location, with all the information you need to help plan your day, and enjoy the outdoors.
