Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama
Description of the role:

This is a voluntary position but expenses can be reimbursed.
The Festival is affiliated with the British & International Federation of Festivals
The main responsibilities currently include: l
- liaison with the Federation and attendance at regional and national meetings;
- arranging Committee meetings & preparing the minutes of those; -
- arranging the AGM and preparing the minutes of that;
- booking adjudicators (issuing letters of engagement and contracts etc three years in advance);
- the ongoing management of the adjudicator panels (keeping them up to date about the Syllabus Programme etc);
- the preparation of the outer pages of both the Syllabus and the Programme (everything except for the sections containing the actual classes);
- attendance at all the festival sessions at Harrogate High School n March & being the first point of contact for people with queries.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

This role really needs a "people person" as much of it involves liaison with the Federation & professional adjudicators.
It would be helpful if the volunteer had IT skills, so as to be able to use Microsoft Word & Excel.

Practical information:

The actual festival takes place in the first three weekends in March every year, currently at Harrogate High School. Saturdays and Sundays run from 08:00 to about 9pm usually.
Committee meeting take pace in Harrogate four or five times a year, usually in the evening for 1.5 hours. The AGM is usually held the Friends' Meeting Houston Queen Parade, Harrogate in June on a Saturday morning- time 1 hour.
There is no formal training offered for this role but other committee members and the Trustees would expect to have to offer guidance and support to a new Secretary until they have fully found their feet.
The Federation has quarterly and annual meetings across the country which the Secretary would usually attend. Full expenses will be reimbursed for hotel and travelling costs.
The Secretary is required to be DBS Enhanced checked , which the Federation will pay for.

The Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech & Drama has been running since 1936 and thousands of (mainly) young people have performed in classes which have received a professional adjudication.

The Festival always takes place in the first three weekends in March and for several years it has been hosted by Harrogate High School.
