Through volunteering your time at Herriot Hospice Homecare, Just ‘B’ and Saint Michael’s you are supporting those in our community who are experiencing terminal illness or bereavement. Volunteers are integral to the work of our charity and we would love to welcome you to our team.
It is essential that volunteers adhere to the role description, undertake appropriate tasks only for which they have been trained and are clear about the boundaries of this role. If volunteers are unsure about any task they have been asked to carry out, they should contact their line manager for advice. This is to ensure the safety and well-being of both clients and volunteers.
About the role:
This is a volunteering role, supporting our communications team with optimising our websites, as well as other digital channels. In working on a key channel for our charity, our volunteer will have the opportunity to make a difference to the experience of people looking for and engaging with information about us online.
This role would suit someone with existing experience in web content/ web development who wishes to give something back, or someone actively developing their skills in digital marketing who is looking to put learning into practice.
Key tasks:
• User testing our Herriot Hospice Homecare, Just ‘B’ and Saint Michael’s websites and identifying opportunities for improvement
• Repairing broken links and connecting orphan pages
• Search engine optimization both on-page e.g with key words, SERP’s etc and off-page e.g. identifying and implementing web referral opportunities
• Improving the accessibility of our sites e.g. by adding alt-text to images, repairing heading structures, adding descriptive links
• Following specified website tactics within our digital communications strategy
Potential additional tasks (depending on experience and interests):
• Working with our Digital Communications Manager to put together charity-wide guidance for accessibility and good web practice, which may include training or workshops
• Producing web content such as blogs and landing pages which support our search ranking, but also enhance the user experience. Creating these should balance technical ability with a person-centred approach to writing, including with high level of accuracy
• Helping monitor overall website health via Google analytics and identify areas for improvement
Required experience:
• Ability to fluently use website content management systems such as Wordpress
• Understanding of search engine optimisation best practices
Desirable experience:
• Knowledge of web development tools such as Ahrefs, Google Search Console, Google Ads
• Lived experience of using assistive technology, or good awareness of common needs surrounding this
Required attributes:
• Trustworthiness in accessing and editing a key communication channel for the organization
• Sensitivity to the subject matter of terminal illness and bereavement
• Strong commitment to accessibility, and supporting people with various needs within our community to equitably use our website and other digital channels
• Attention to detail and patience in working in depth on technical aspects
Training requirements:
1. Familiarisation with Lone Working Policy
2. Training on our consent policy
3. Training on our website content management systems and introduction to our organisation’s brand and digital strategies.
