Description of the role:

Are you passionate about supporting women who have been subjected to domestic abuse regain ownership of their lives? Would you like to help us with our vision where we live in a world where all are educated in all forms of domestic abuse and it is no longer tolerated, accepted or present in society? Would you like a weekly (term time) role where your contribution is appreciated? Would you like to volunteer in a friendly, supportive and safe environment with great learning and training opportunities? Would you like a chance to meet new people whilst also making a huge difference? Have you been subjected to domestic abuse and wish to support women through their healing?

The service is a women-led peer service and is therefore restricted to women/non-binary (assigned female at birth) applicants under the Equality Act 2010 Schedule 9 Part 1 & Section 7(2)e of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

We are looking for a positive, outgoing and empathetic person to join our volunteer team. The role involves supporting a peer mentor or peer facilitator in the running of a weekly support group.This includes helping prepare resources, welcoming attendees, serving refreshments and supporting the clients emotionally. In the absence of a peer mentor/facilitator we would require you to lead the group. This requires an open and non judgemental approach with a positive outlook, to build trust and ensure the provision of a safe and supportive environment. As such we are looking for someone with good interpersonal skills, a forward thinker with similar experience of either attending, running or supporting a group setting.

Please note this is not a counselling group, the aim is to create positive social networks in an environment that allows for basic welfare checks and timely signposting opportunities.

Practical information:

Availability required (in preferred location):
Harrogate- Wednesdays 12.30pm-2.30pm ( term time only)
Skipton- Wednesday (term time only)
Plus additional time to help research and prepare resources for group.

New Beginnings Peer Support is a peer led charitable organisation supporting female survivors of domestic abuse in the Harrogate District. We provide a safe environment for women and their children to re-establish themselves, reach their goals and achieve a happier, healthier future.
New Beginnings is operating throughout the coronavirus outbreak and services include:-
• 1:1 support via phone/video calls including relevant signposting,
• Peer support WhatsApp group sharing information, encouraging positive support network & providing access to practical & emotional support,
• Private Facebook group & Instagram Account– offering signposting and information,
• Public Facebook page sharing information and raising awareness of the realities of domestic abuse.
Emotional support is provided through peers, mentoring & increasing your support network with practical support including but not limited to housing, business start-ups, finding employment, budgeting, food bank requests, clothing needs, support with family court. All to with the aim of improving your overall health & wellbeing.
This group is for those who feel ready to move on with their life and would like support to do so in a safe and understanding environment. Please note we are not a counselling group. Our aim is to help people start afresh and complement existing services.
