Our new Selby Walking Group enables adults with disabilities to enjoy countryside walks of up to 6 miles. The role of the volunteer is to support the disabled members of the group; this may be guiding someone with a visual impairment or just providing general support, assistance and company.
Good communication skills, patience and a sense of humour are useful, as well as a love of the outdoors (and being outside in all weathers!). A basic level of fitness is required as the group walks up to 6 miles.
The group meets in Selby on Thursdays at the leisure centre car park, at 10.15am, returning about 4pm. Some 'on-site' training will be provided and volunteers will need to complete some health & safety and safeguarding paperwork prior to joining us.

We also run a countryside access advice service and produce a number of countryside access publications.
Open Country’s Breakfree packs for Harrogate District and Wharfedale are easy access routes which can be enjoyed by children, cyclists and people with disabilities, including wheelchair users. The packs have clear, colour maps for each location, with all the information you need to help plan your day, and enjoy the outdoors.
