Wellbeing Volunteer (The Lambert & Saint Michael's Hospice)
North Yorkshire Hospice Care
Description of the role:

Wellbeing volunteers support the wellbeing team, providing some dedicated time to a person over the age of 18 who may be effected by a terminal illness in some way. The time offered can be used to reduce loneliness and isolation, offer a little respite to a carer and offering practical support – such as driving a person to a hospital appointment or to be able to attend a social group. In addition to being part of the running of our social clubs, offering a kind welcome and refreshments . Our volunteers are dedicated and have been through our induction and training process, so carers and family members of those living with terminal illness can go away safe in the knowledge that, while they have some time to themselves, their friend or loved one will be in the best possible hands.

Key tasks:

Befriending
A trained volunteer can provide companionship and support to people who live alone or who are alone for long periods of the day, or who need support while they are undergoing treatment. This may involve social activities, such as playing cards, watching television, going shopping, going out for a drive nearby, or a short walk.

Sitting
If you care for a friend or loved one, inevitably, from time to time, you will be in need of a well-earned break.

Driving
Volunteer drivers are able to take people to and from hospital appointments when a community ambulance is not appropriate or when family members and friends are unavailable.

Social groups
Volunteers to support with setting up the environment, welcoming and engaging with those who attend the groups signposting to a trained member of staff when required.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

Volunteers will need excellent communication skills
Ability to show empathy and patience and approachable
Driving license and use of a car
• Volunteers will be required to undertake a suite of mandatory training including safeguarding, information governance and Health and Safety, completion of a training booklet.
Volunteers will receive an induction into the organisation and the role they will be undertaking.
On the job training will be undertaken
Additional training modules may be required to complete from time to time.

Practical information:

Potential volunteers will be asked to complete a role-specific volunteer application form.
Selected candidates will be invited to an initial interview.
Volunteers will then be required to attend the training programme outlined above.
Volunteers will be interviewed again following the training, providing the opportunity to reflect on the issues raised/discussed during the training.
Additional ‘top-up’ training will be offered where appropriate.
All volunteers are required to complete safeguarding and information governance training.
All volunteers are required to complete the North Yorkshire Hospice Care Mandatory Training prior to starting (and repeat this at defined intervals) alongside a departmental induction with your line manager.
