Description of the role:

This is a fantastic opportunity to join our team of friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who welcome visitors from far and wide to the 3 unique Ripon Law and Order Museums. You will be playing a vital role in keeping the museums open and operational so visitors can learn and enjoy their experience.

These roles are at all 3 museums and enable a volunteer to either welcome visitors and guide them along their way or be in character sharing stories from the past whilst helping visitors to maintain social distance. A volunteer can be as creative as they wish with this role.

The front of house team provide the first contact visitors have of the museums so this enjoyable and interesting role is vital for our continued success and development. Whether you want to develop new skills and gain valuable work experience or are just interested in keeping active, meeting new people and being involved in your local community, the Workhouse Visitor Host role is perfect for you.

The role will include:

Welcoming and chatting to visitors & answering any questions using a briefing sheet & map.
Helping visitors to maintain appropriate social distance within the museums.
Unlocking and preparing the building for opening at the start of the duty - optional.
Locking the building at the end of each duty - optional.

Can be in costume or not

For this role there is no cash handling or till involved, just giving the visitors a warm welcome

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

• Friendly and enthusiastic approach
• Enjoy meeting and talking to people
• Excellent verbal communication and listening skills
• An interest in history and local heritage useful but not essential
• Reliable and punctual
• Able to work independently or as part of a team
• Able to use humour to share knowledge
• Willingness to learn new skills

There is no cash handling or use of a till in this role

Practical information:

Our 3 museums are open 6 days a week.
Hours are flexible as volunteers are needed across weekdays and weekends.
This opportunity is 2-3 hours either morning or afternoon
Volunteers can give as much time as they are able
Training will be provided

We are a few minutes walk away from Ripon Bus station. Car park is available for volunteer use.

Preservation of historic buildings and artefacts, education services and responsible for The Prison & Police, The Workhouse and The Courthouse Museums in Ripon. We have around 140 volunteers who fulfil a variety of roles which range from helping with education visits to gardening, cataloguing the collections to keeping our accounts, repairing brickwork to researching the stories behind the buildings.
