Description of the role:

YJS Appropriate Adult
Appropriate Adult tasks and duties
1. To attend the Police Station custody suite in Harrogate in order to support young people aged 10 – 17 years who have been arrested and detained by the police
2. To ensure that you follow YJS guidance as to the calling out of solicitors to attend and refusing to attend for the purposes of a youth caution.
3. To occasionally attend secure establishments where young people are being interviewed whilst either on remand or serving a sentence.
4. To support, advise and assist the detained person, particularly while they are being formally interviewed.
5. To ensure the police have made every reasonable effort to secure attendance by parent or relative or foster parent.
6. To check on the welfare of the young person detained, including whether he or she has been offered food and drink or blankets
7. To ensure the young person understands their rights, the police processes and the reason for his or her detention.
8. To attend the police interview and to intercede if it is not carried out fairly and properly according to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act
9. To facilitate communication between the detained young person and the police.
10. To liaise with the Youth Justice Service, duty managers and social services.
11. To seek advice and guidance on any complicated cases or cases where a young person may be arrested for a grave or serious crime.
12. To observe NYCC and Youth Justice Service procedures during the course of all volunteering activities.
13. To maintain a non-judgmental approach and follow anti-oppressive & anti-discriminatory practices.
14. To maintain accurate written records and ensure completed AA forms and other paperwork is completed and sent to the Youth Offending Team or other parties in a timely manner.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

Appropriate Adult Summary of role

To assist in communication between Police and young person and to observe fair treatment. To advise young person in a non-legal sense.

Minimum time commitment Varied – able to respond to unplanned work

Key skills - Empathy with young person and ability to gain confidence of the Police

Primary responsibility - To accompany young people during Police interviews

Qualities required - Ability to work independently

Training required (will be provided) - Foundation and Appropriate Adult Training

Opportunities for volunteer - Developing skills in assessing the well-being of young people in custody, and ensuring fair treatment. The opportunity to improve advocacy skills.

Practical information:

The role involves being called out to the Police Station usually at short notice i.e. you may be needed within the next hour. There is no formal rota. Currently we ask people to give us an idea of when they are more likely to be available e.g. weekends after 3 pm, weekday evenings, and they will be contacted by the duty manager if needed. The hours we have agreed to provide AA cover to the Police are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m seven days a week.There is never an obligation to attend. The volunteer will need to be able to make their own way to the Police Station and expenses can be claimed for required journeys.
