We are looking for people who are interested and skilled in computers and technology to visit disabled and older people in their own homes to help with their IT needs. Volunteers may be asked to help set up a computer system for someone, install software or hardware, troubleshoot problems or even help to change a printer cartridge or give some basic training on how to use systems.
We support all individuals living with any disability. In the past year, locally we have provided assistance to individuals living with cancer, reduced vision, cognitive impairment, limited physical mobility, and impaired hearing, as well as socially isolated older people.
Our charity's work is backed by Microsoft and IBM, and you will have the opportunity to make life enhancing changes to the well-being of our clients.
We are looking for people with experience of Windows and Apple systems, people who know about using iPads, and android tablets as well as those who may have experience of adaptive technology.
Volunteers should have: good IT and computer skills, patience, good interpersonal and communication skills.
Access to computer and email facilities.
This role requires a DBS and this will be obtained for you if you do not already have one.
Own transport.
An induction pack is sent to every new volunteer. On going support is offered from your local volunteer coordinator and central team. Free webinars are available to increase knowledge of adaptive technology. There is access to a specialist suite of fact sheets for different conditions via our website. https://abilitynet.org.uk/free-resources/abilitynet-factsheets
We are a national charity and do not operate any postcode lottery in the service we offer. This said, we always seek to match client requests to the nearest volunteer based on their travelling time, and therefore, the level of requests you will receive will depend on the demand in your locality. This role is extremely flexible and adaptable in that you will establish a mutually suitable time to visit the client to provide the requested assistance.
Please note that this role is not suitable for someone looking for a regular volunteering opportunity, but also can be easy fitted around someone who is in full-time employment who would like to give something back to the community.
If you would just like to find out more about the role, please call 0800 048 7642.
If you would to join our team, please can you complete our application form:

Do You Know Someone Who Struggles to Get to An Online Digital Training Centre?
Although there are online digital training centres spread across our area, there are individuals who struggle to get to a centre:
* A visually impaired person who lives in a small village,
* Someone who has COPD and struggles to leave the house,
* Someone with mental health issues who struggles in a communal environment,
* Full-time carer looking after a loved-one, or
* Perhaps someone who has recently had a stroke or heart attack.
AbilityNet is a nationwide charity which provides FREE one-to-one IT support, guidance, and assistance to anyone living with any disability or is an older person in the comfort of their own home. They have a dedicated group of volunteers in our area who have all been DBS checked. Whilst they do not provide equipment, they can:
• Provide impartial advice on options to consider
• Set up mobile phones, computers, tablets
• Load hardware and software
• Trouble shoot problems
• Deliver coaching and support on a one-to-one basis
• Adapt technology to suit the individual, eg changing the speaking speed, screen colours, magnification
