Description of the role:

Front of house volunteers are integral to the running of each of our museums. Without them, we simply cannot open our doors. On the Front Desk, you will be responsible for welcoming visitors and selling tickets. As the first point of contact for many of our guests, you really are the face of the museum. We are looking for friendly, reliable volunteers who enjoy meeting new people.

What’s involved?
This role has many responsibilities which include issuing tickets, money handling, answering visitors’ questions and promoting visitor opportunities. All training is provided, and you will be supported by a duty manager and other front of house members.

Is this role for me?
This is a great role if you’re interested in meeting new people and being more sociable. We are looking for volunteers who are organised and enjoy responsibility. You should be friendly and approachable, but don’t worry if you’re a little shy, this role has proven that it’s great for boosting confidence.

Role includes:
• Opening and closing the museum at the beginning and end of the session.
• Welcoming and talking to visitors
• Selling admission tickets and making shop sales
• Giving information to visitors and helping them to enjoy their visit.
• General tidying and cleaning of the reception are/museum as required.
• Cashing up the daily takings if required at the end of the session.
• General administration tasks if able and appropriate.
• Working with other volunteers and staff.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

A friendly, personable nature and confident and dealing with members of the public:
• Friendly and enthusiastic approach
• Enjoy meeting and talking to people
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• An interest in history and local heritage useful but not essential
• Reliable, punctual and energetic!
• Able to work independently or as part of a team
• Able to use humor to share knowledge
• Willingness to learn new skills
• Ability to handle cash
• Numerate

All 3 museums are within walking distance of Ripon City Centre.
Prison and Police Museum is on St. Marygate, Ripon HG4 1LX
Workhouse Museum is on Sharow View, Allhallowgate, Ripon HG4 1LE
Courthouse Museum is on Minster Road, Ripon HG4 1QS

• Our 3 museums are open 7 days a week. Hours are flexible as volunteers are needed across weekdays and weekends.
• A front of house duty is a minimum of 2-3 hours either morning or afternoon.
• Volunteers can give as much time as they are able

Organisation Information

Preservation of historic buildings and artefacts, education services and responsible for The Prison & Police, The Workhouse and The Courthouse Museums in Ripon. We have around 140 volunteers who fulfil a variety of roles which range from helping with education visits to gardening, cataloguing the collections to keeping our accounts, repairing brickwork to researching the stories behind the buildings.
