Trustee
Emerging Voices
Description of the role:

Since 2019, Emerging Voices has provided musical opportunities such as 1:1 instrumental lessons, open mic nights, songwriting workshops and weekly choir sessions to a growing number of adults with lived experience of mental ill-health in North Yorkshire. This work has crucial impact on the lives of these individuals, as they themselves tell us.

The charity is small but growing fast and the potential for it to grow further is simply enormous, we have no shortage of ambition! There is a close relationship with the world class converge programme run by York St John's University and the charity has access to the highly capable musicians, sound engineers and tutors that are based there. There are also good relationships with York CVS, York University and several other charities in York and beyond. Until recently the charity had been focused on York but we have started spreading our wings and we now have a choir in Harrogate and will be starting one in Selby soon.

The trustees are diverse and have a broad range of skills - we encourage trustees to take the lead in areas that reflect their skills and interests so if you have a particular interest or skill there is likely to be an opportunity to lead in that area. Alternatively, there is an opportunity to learn and develop new skills for example we would welcome applications from people who would be willing to lead on any of these areas; equality, diversity and inclusion, financial matters, contracting, information governance, website design, impact assessment, and fundraising. This list is not exhaustive - if there is something else you are good at or interested in then please suggest it!

Trusteeship is an excellent way to "give back" whilst developing skills and getting experience steering an organisation that is focused on social outcomes and not profit. The board is friendly and supportive, you don't need to have any previous experience as a trustee because we can teach you that, and we will provide safeguarding training and can signpost trusteeship educational content.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

We are seeking a broad range of backgrounds, skills and interests.

Musical skills are not required but enthusiastic support for the concept of musical sessions as a good way to improve the lives of adults with mental ill-health is essential.

You need to be willing to chip in and work with other board members to support the objectives of the charity.

Practical information:

Board meetings are 6 weekly alternating between on line and face to face in the University of York. Project work is variable and flexible.
