Local Humanitarian to Deliver Much-Needed Ambulance to Ukraine

Local Humanitarian to Deliver Much-Needed Ambulance to Ukraine

John Shackleton, MBE, an 85-year-old veteran humanitarian from Harrogate has embarked on 49 missions, over 80% of which were self-funded, delivering aid to war-torn regions such as Romania, Kosovo, and Afghanistan at considerable financial cost to himself.

Recognised in The King’s Birthday Honours List for his services to fundraising and humanitarian aid, John seeks support for his upcoming 50th mission, which will also be his 3rd to Kiev, Ukraine. This mission is particularly significant as it may be his last, given his plans to retire, marking a dedicated culmination of over 30 years of service. The goal is to raise £30,000, with a planned departure in mid to late September 2024, possibly adjusting to early October.
John’s upcoming mission to Ukraine is driven by the urgent need for medical support in the ongoing conflict. The key objectives of this mission include delivering a fully equipped ambulance, along  with wheelchairs and other essential supplies.

Despite recovering from a heart attack last year, John’s commitment remains unwavering. He said: “Every mission is a challenge, but the support we bring is vital. It’s a risk I’m willing to take for those in desperate need.”

John’s dedication to humanitarian work is rooted in his background. He served 10 years in the RAF, including three years as a mountaineer and seven years on a Bomb Disposal Squad. After his military service, he engaged in property renovation and funded his missions through public speaking    engagements, chopping and selling wood, and offering rubbish removal services.

To ensure the success of this mission, John and his supporters are seeking to raise £30,000 to cover:
          • Ambulance (fully equipped): £20,000
          • Fuel: £500
          • Insurance: £300
          • Tolls (Ferry/Train/Toll Roads): £200 - £300
          • Return Transport for 3 People: £600
          • Basic Accommodation (3 Persons): £500
          • Documentation and Notary Fees: £180 - £450
          • Meals (3 Persons): £200

The remaining funds will be used for additional supplies and unforeseen expenses. While John has borne the financial load for his past missions, he now seeks the community's financial assistance to continue this critical work.
