Volunteers’ Week is a time when we recognise the huge contribution volunteers make. This year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ aims to encourage people to be the change that we want to see and get involved in whatever way works for them.
The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering, such as at ‘Young at Heart’.
This friendly, welcoming group is for anyone aged 60 or over in the Ripon area. It meets every Tuesday from 12.30pm in Allhallowgate Church Hall, Victoria Grove, hosted by Allhallowgate Methodist Church, with 6 trained, community volunteers providing a warm welcome.
A freshly prepared light lunch is available, with live background music. A wide programme of activities is arranged, including crafts, music, dance, table games, discussions, film shows, team quizzes, IT taster sessions, seated exercise, guest speakers and demonstrations. There is also the opportunity to chat with friends or read the paper, if you wish. The cost is just £4.
Attached to ‘Young at Heart’ is an Art Group. Members bring their own materials, but some basic items can be provided to help get people started. There is also a Book Club to discuss a book members have chosen and read.
A Signposting and Information Service supports anyone with any issues concerning them.
‘Young at Heart’ offers a happy, supportive place where people can relax, have fun, make new friends or learn about new hobbies and interests.
Members enjoy the company. They said: ‘It’s a very enjoyable and happy place to be - definitely better than sitting at home and staring at 4 walls!’
‘I have made some lovely new friends and now look forward to Tuesdays’.
‘It’s such a friendly, welcoming group and it’s made a huge difference to me’
‘We have some really good laughs.’
‘Young at Heart’ would love to have more volunteers to join their amazing team making such a positive difference, particularly to help with setting up and clearing away, planning and running activities, or chatting with members.
For further information about ‘Young at Heart’ or volunteering with the team please contact 07989 484967 for a friendly, informal chat, or just pop in on Tuesdays.
For younger Ripon residents, Squigglers Art Club for 10-14 year olds, meets on Mondays 4.30-6pm during term time. They are also looking for adult volunteers to support the lead worker, set up and pack away resources and help young people to take part in activities. If you would like to learn new skills, be a part of your community, help and inspire local young people, why not contact Rachel on 07500 787621 or email rachel@nyy.org.uk.
