Early in 2022, the Rotary Club of Harrogate planted 400 trees at a site on Menwith Hill Road just off the A59. They are now looking for volunteers to help with some tree maintenance.
You'll be no more than 2 hours onsite, less if you need to be elsewhere.
The site is a 30 minute drive from the centre of Harrogate. There is parking onsite. Volunteers will be sent a map. There will be ‘Rotary Trees’ signs on Menwith Hill Road to guide you.
Please bring with you: Gardening gloves and wellington boots or similar. A heavy hammer if you have one (some available onsite). A dark marker pen to mark the tree guard as ‘checked’.
The process will be demonstrated onsite. You'll need to loosen the plastic quick-release ties and raise the tree guard up by a foot. If the tree looks dead, remove the guard and check again. If dead, remove the stake and place by the guard for removal later. If alive, remove any grasses growing up the guard and clear around the base of the tree. Replace the guard carefully, tighten the ties and check the stake is firmly in place. Mark the top of the guard with an X on the side facing the house.
