Description of the role:

This is a fantastic opportunity to join our team of friendly and enthusiastic volunteers who welcome visitors from far and wide to the 3 unique Ripon Law and Order Museums. You will be playing a vital role in keeping the museums open and operational so visitors can learn and enjoy their experience.

The front of house team provide the first contact visitors have with the museums so this enjoyable and interesting role is vital for our continued success and development. Whether you want to develop new skills, gain valuable work experience, meet new people or are just interested in keeping active and involved in your local community the front of house role is perfect for you. You may be:

• Opening and closing the museum at the beginning and end of the session (optional)
• Welcoming and talking to visitors
• Selling items in our shop using a tablet, card reader and printer - no cash handling involved.
• Giving information to visitors and helping them to maintain social distancing
• General tidying and cleaning of the shop and cafe area as required
• Working with other volunteers and staff and having the opportunity to input on our retail offer in terms of stock, season plans and ideas

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

• Friendly and enthusiastic approach
• Enjoy meeting and talking to people
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• An interest in history and local heritage useful but not essential
• Reliable, punctual and energetic!
• Able to work independently or as part of a team
• Willingness to learn new skills
• Numerate

Practical information:

The Workhouse Museum is on Sharow View, Allhallowgate, Ripon HG4 1LE and within walking distance of the city centre.

Organisation Information

Preservation of historic buildings and artefacts, education services and responsible for The Prison & Police, The Workhouse and The Courthouse Museums in Ripon. We have around 140 volunteers who fulfil a variety of roles which range from helping with education visits to gardening, cataloguing the collections to keeping our accounts, repairing brickwork to researching the stories behind the buildings.
