Allotment Volunteer
Open Country
Description of the role:

Volunteers will help to support adults with learning disabilities or mental health issues to enjoy our allotment. Activities include growing fruit and vegetables, wildlife gardening, outdoor cooking and trips out to local gardens.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

It is important that volunteers are friendly and sociable and enjoy working with and supporting disabled people. Gardening or allotment skills are not essential as you can learn 'on the job', but it would be good if you love the outdoors and don't mind getting your hands dirty!

Practical information:

The allotment group meets on Fridays from 10am to 3pm, but you wouldn't have to volunteer every week.

Organisation Information

Open Country is a charitable organisation. We aim to enable anyone with a disability to access and enjoy the countryside. We run activity groups including walking, cycling, outdoor pursuits and wildlife studies and we run a countryside access advice service and produce a number of countryside access publications.

Open Country’s Breakfree packs for Harrogate District, Nidderdale AONB and Wharfedale are easy access routes can be enjoyed by children, cyclists and people with disabilities, including wheelchair users. The packs have clear, colour maps for each location, with all the information you need to help plan your day, and enjoy the outdoors, when you may not be able to take part in other activities during the coronavirus outbreak.
Open Country has created a series of free to listen audio walks to help bring the outdoors indoors for anyone who is missing getting out and about during the coronavirus outbreak or simply wants to enjoy nature from the comfort of their home. A Winter Nature Activity Pack will help you get involved with wildlife in your home, gardens and local parks.
