Description of the role:

Family Events Volunteer, Community Support Team.

Location: Various across Yorkshire (although many groups are at The Square, 8 Woodhouse Square, Leeds, LS3 1AD).

Purpose of the Role and Key Activities:

Candlelighters offers a variety of support groups and events for families affected by childhood cancer. The Family Events Volunteer help the Community Support Team to set up and manage each group, event or community day to ensure it runs smoothly and successfully.

Even helping with just a few events would really help us to support families.

Activities will vary according to each event but may include:

· Helping to set up prior to the event (arranging furniture, putting up decorations etc …)

· Putting out food and refreshments

· Meeting and greeting

· Keeping a record of attendance

· Making hot and cold drinks

· Cleaning and tidying up

· Serving lunches and refreshments

· Taking notes

· Taking photos

· Organising or assisting with games and activities

· Engaging with family members and helping them to feel involved

· Helping to supervise children

· Cleaning and tidying up at the end of the event

· Assisting the Community Support with any other tasks and activities as required

· Maintaining professional boundaries at all times

· Adhering to Candlelighters’ policies and procedures.

With the introduction of our new Community Support Model, Candlelighters will also be providing Community Days for families living in Yorkshire affected by childhood cancer. This new model of support looks to reduce the isolation felt by families, increase peer support and remove distance as a barrier for families accessing support from Candlelighters. Our Community Days will comprise of walks & talks, coffee mornings and wellbeing days, hosted in local venues. As a Family Event Volunteer, you can help the Community Support Team deliver these wonderful new events across Yorkshire.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

We are looking for volunteers who:

· Have experience of working with children or families in a professional context

· Have working knowledge of safeguarding procedures and safer working practices

· Are able to assist with all types of groups and events

· Can manage the emotionally challenging aspects of the role

· Are confident, friendly and approachable

· Have a fun and positive outlook

· Are experienced in working as part of a team

· Can work well and remain calm under pressure

· Are proactive and able to use own initiative

· Are hardworking, reliable and organised

· Are able to move furniture (tables and chairs) and boxes

· Are able to climb multiple flights of stairs

· Are able to maintain professional boundaries and follow Candlelighters Policies and Procedures.

Please note, volunteers will not be able to volunteer at a group attended by families they know in a personal capacity.

This role is subject to an enhanced criminal record check, which is processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

· General induction training

· Role specific training and induction

· Support from the Community Support Team & Volunteer Supervisor.

Candlelighters provides emotional, practical & financial support to families affected by childhood cancer in Yorkshire. We support around 150 new families each year and our work ensures the whole family unit is supported in these extraordinary circumstances.

We support children and their families from diagnosis and throughout their journey, including financial support, practical help in hospital, much needed breaks, nearby accommodation during treatment at the Candlelighters Cottage as well as emotional and well-being support at our Family Support Centre (The Square) and in the Community.
