Skell Valley Archive indexing volunteer

Skell Valley Archive indexing volunteer
National Trust - Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal
Description of the role:

The Skell Valley, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, is a landscape with a long and diverse heritage. In collaboration with West Yorkshire Archive Service the National trust and Nidderdale AONB are leading a diverse National Heritage Lottery funded project about the valley. One element of which is the indexing of archives related to the valley. Volunteering from home using digital images and document transcripts you'll be extrapolating key data from some of the fantastic archives that relate to the Skell Valley to help create searchable indexes for use by others to find records they would have, otherwise never discovered.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

You'll be passionate about history or the Skell Valley and want to find out about heritage. You'll demonstrate attention to detail and be reasonably computer literate. You'll also have the opportunity to learn how archives work, experience volunteering in the heritage sector and develop new skills; for example palaeography (reading old handwriting).

Practical information:

You'll mostly be volunteering from home so access to a computer and the internet is essential. Some of the training will take place at West Yorkshire archives in Leeds which is accessible by bus or car.
