Description of the role:

We are looking for a friendly, caring and reliable person to help with the smooth running of our weekly Ripon Vision Support Group at Allhallowgate Methodist Church, which is specifically designed to entertain and provide a place of friendship and support for our over 60s members who are living with sight loss. Duties of a Vision Support Group helper involve help making and serving teas and coffees, help members navigate their surroundings and generally enjoy the morning sessions along with them. As well as general helpers our group is also looking for help with small admin duties to support John, our group leader and activities organiser. Sighted guiding training will be provided. This group has been meeting for over 40 years in Ripon and our members are excited to be reopening after a long year of not being able to meet and welcome new friends to the group.

Practical information:

The Club runs every Tuesday in term time 10am - 11.30am. So we are looking for help or the following time frame 9.45am to 12pm.

Organisation Information

During the coronavirus outbreak, the following services are still running:
• The home visiting services has been temporarily replaced with telephone befriending. This service is available to anyone with sight loss who would like someone to talk to or who needs a little extra support. Vision Support members are also being telephone befriended.
• The sight loss help and advice line is available on 01423 565915. The team are able to help with understanding TV licence changes.
• Telephone appointments can be made with the ECLO (Eye Clinic Liaison Officer) for people new to sight loss and those who have recently been diagnosed with a serious eye condition. This service offers practical and emotional support.

The Centre is an independent, local charity that supports visually impaired people in Harrogate and the surrounding district. We seek to enable visually impaired adults from the age of 18 and above to live independently and provide opportunities to meet and interact with others. We offer Information technology training; provide advice on help that is available; information on visual impairments and have talking clocks. watches and other equipment to view and order if required
We run various craft and other groups (See the daily schedule) on a regular basis There are also opportunities to socialise, including meals out and excursions. In addition to activities in the Centre, we make home visits and run a telephone befriending service to help tackle social isolation.
