Description of the role:

We are an ambitious team with learning at the heart of all we do working with the community.

Our shared mission is:

“To enrich the lives of all who experience and are inspired by our historic law and order sites and collections so that they gain insights into, and are provoked into thinking about, how the treatment of offended and the relief of the poor have developed over the past 200 years.”

We are looking for new learning team volunteers to join our existing enthusiastic team. Our learning team delivers a range of formal and informal programmes for primary and secondary schools, universities and colleges. In addition to delivering tours and talks to adult groups and family learning activities and events.

Ripon Museum Trust has a growing reputation for the delivery of engaging, interactive and enjoyable learning sessions and is the holder of the Sandford Award for Museum Education and the Marsh Trust regional award for volunteers in museum learning. By joining the learning team you will have fun and meet new people, whilst using or developing your skills and experience of working with children and adults in the museums.

What will I be doing?

The role may involve:

• Welcoming and providing information to groups and schools on arrival
• Leading or assisting with family activities during school holidays
• Leading or assisting with workshops/activities
• Helping prepare resources and set up the workshop/activity
• Clear up and tidy after workshop/activity
• May be in costume/role depending upon activity
• Work within the learning team during events and special activities
• Be involved in research, interpretation and exhibitions
• Learning about local history, law and order and Victorians

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

• Friendly and enthusiastic approach
• Excellent verbal communication skills
• An interest in history and local heritage useful but not essential
• Reliable, punctual and energetic!
• Able to work independently or as part of a team
• Experience of working with children, young people or education groups is useful but not essential
• Able to use humor to share knowledge
• Willingness to learn new skills

Practical information:

How much time will I be expected to give?

• Hours are flexible but school visits & family activities are generally a morning 9.30am - 1pm or an afternoon 1 - 3pm
• Adult and youth groups may be evenings and weekends

Organisation Information

Preservation of historic buildings and artefacts, education services and responsible for The Prison & Police, The Workhouse and The Courthouse Museums in Ripon. We have around 140 volunteers who fulfil a variety of roles which range from helping with education visits to gardening, cataloguing the collections to keeping our accounts, repairing brickwork to researching the stories behind the buildings.
