Buddy Volunteers
Disability Action Yorkshire
Description of the role:

Friendship and enjoying simple social activities are things most of us take for granted. By becoming a buddy for a disabled person you can help them to access enjoyable and enriching activities and opportunities. These might be as simple as going shopping or going to the pub - or it could be finding a job, learning to drive, or go hang-gliding - there are no limits!

This doesn't mean that you would necessarily have to do every activity with your buddy partner; it may just be about helping them to research the opportunities and supporting them to get there.

The majority of buddy partners will be younger people, but you could be supporting anyone up to the age of 64 to achieve whatever life goals they may have.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

We aren't looking for people who have experience, what we need are people who can listen and support and who have a genuine wish to enable others to achieve their goals. Buddying is a two way process and we will be looking to make good buddy matches that lead to a great two way relationship.

There are no set criteria for a buddy! We would very much welcome applications from buddies of all ages, backgrounds, and with a range of interests and hobbies.

Practical information:

Buddies will be given an initial induction which will include safeguarding training, basic disability awareness and an outline of what we expect from our buddies and what buddies can expect from us.

We will pay out of pocket expenses incurred as a result of volunteering.

There is no set time or day or time commitment when we will need buddies - it is really dependent on the needs of the buddy partner.
