Talking Spaces Counselling and Support Service
Description of the role:

Volunteer Counsellor - Saint Michael's Hospice is now running local counselling and support service Talking Spaces, which operates alongside our Just 'B' Bereavement Service at Burton House. Through volunteering your time at Talking Spaces you are supporting those in our community who have emotional, psychological, and/or mental health needs. All services offered by Talking Spaces are free at the point of need and available to people who are 18 years old and over. Talking Spaces is supported by nearly 50 volunteers. Volunteers are integral to the work of Talking Spaces and we would love to welcome you to our team. You will be required to support a minimum of 3 clients a week according to their availability. Key tasks: ' To provide professional and confidential counselling on a one-to-one basis to Talking Spaces clients - minimum 3 clients a week ' To develop and promote a positive, supportive relationship with the client/s with whom the volunteer is matched ' To manage appropriate professional boundaries in the relationship ' Adherence to professional code of ethics and good practice ' To liaise effectively with the Talking Spaces Manager and Coordinator to provide a quality service ' To maintain records for monitoring, evaluation and tracking purposes ' To take responsibility for own professional training and development ' To keep up-to-date with developments in the field of counselling ' To attend internal training events (minimum 3 per year) ' To actively take part in peer support and supervision ' To notify Talking Spaces Manager of any concerns with clients ' To abide by Saint Michael's Policies and Procedures as set out in the volunteer handbook, including confidentiality and safeguarding of adults, children and young people.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

Volunteers must either be qualified counsellors or in the second year of their diploma and will need to undergo an enhanced DBS check. Key attributes: An open manner and non-judgemental approach Excellent listening and communication skills Reliable, organised, consistent and dependable Positive and passionate about the volunteer of Talking Spaces, Just 'B' and Saint Michael's Hospice A commitment to incorporating equality and diversity into all aspects of service delivery Volunteers will be based either at our Just 'B' Bereavement Support Centre, Burton House, Hookstone Oval, Harrogate or at Saint Michael's@Starbeck on The Avenue, Starbeck. Mileage paid at 45p per mile and public transport paid up to a maximum of £5.00 per day. Volunteers are given a handbook outlining admin procedures with policies and procedures and a data protection form and volunteer agreement form to sign. Also an in-depth induction with the Co-ordinator. Training is provided in counselling related topics e.g. mental health awareness, lone volunteering, volunteering with vulnerable adults.

The service offers counselling, support and social groups to help adults who are experiencing mental health problems. This can include people with low self-esteem, who lack confidence or who are struggling to manage their life experiences. The service also supports people with depression and anxiety or more long term conditions, such as schizophrenia.
Professionals who are able to refer to the service include GPs, health professionals, workers in social care, drug and alcohol services, services working with people who are victims of domestic abuse and charities working in the Harrogate and district area.
