Volunteers help with the safe and efficient running of groups and clubs supporting disabled adults to take part in countryside activities. In return we offer you interesting and rewarding days out, a real sense of achievement, but essentially fun! You might find yourself pushing a wheelchair, acting as a sighted guide, or just supporting group members on their day out. Our activities include trips to country houses, nature reserves, and the seaside, birdwatching and easy going walks, as well as more adventurous activities such as abseiling and canoeing!
Good communication skills, patience and a sense of humour are useful, as well as a love of the countryside. A basic level of fitness is required. You will be required to attend a short induction and training before you begin your volunteering role.
We meet at Community House in Harrogate at 10am and return by about 5.30pm, dropping people off at home if they prefer.

Open Country’s Breakfree packs for Harrogate District, Nidderdale AONB and Wharfedale are easy access routes can be enjoyed by children, cyclists and people with disabilities, including wheelchair users. The packs have clear, colour maps for each location, with all the information you need to help plan your day, and enjoy the outdoors, when you may not be able to take part in other activities during the coronavirus outbreak.
Open Country has created a series of free to listen audio walks to help bring the outdoors indoors for anyone who is missing getting out and about during the coronavirus outbreak or simply wants to enjoy nature from the comfort of their home. A Winter Nature Activity Pack will help you get involved with wildlife in your home, gardens and local parks.
