Description of the role:

We carry out practical conservation work on nature reserves and local council land including: scrub clearance, tree planting, pond digging and footpath maintenance. Your role would be to work with and support adults with learning disabilities and mental health issues in carrying out these tasks.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

It is important that volunteers are friendly and sociable and enjoy working with and supporting disabled people. Practical skills are helpful, but not essential. A basic level of fitness is required. Tools and training are provided - just bring enthusiasm and your own lunch!

Practical information:

We meet at Community House in Harrogate on Fridays at 10am, travel to the work site in the minibus and return at about 4pm.

We run a range of activity groups including, walking, cycling, outdoor pursuits, practical conservation work and nature study. We also run a countryside access advice service and produce a number of countryside access publications.

Open Country’s Breakfree packs for Harrogate District and Wharfedale are easy access routes which can be enjoyed by children, cyclists and people with disabilities, including wheelchair users. The packs have clear, colour maps for each location, with all the information you need to help plan your day, and enjoy the outdoors.
