Description of the role:

The buddy network is a befriending service setup to support young people aged 14-19 years in need of low level guidance and support. The young people have received intensive support through working with other organisations but aren't quite ready to face the world on their own. The buddy will act as a trusted adult who can provide a listening ear and proactive support to the young person, encouraging them to participate in their community and to access appropriate support services.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

No specific qualifications required for the role. Skills: · Excellent listening skills. · First-rate interpersonal and communication skills · Ability to engage young people · Ability to encourage strengths and challenge weaknesses · Commitment to personal development · Patience · Reliable · Non-Judgemental · Enthusiastic and positive · Persistence · Awareness of issues facing young people · Life experience · Flexibility to volunteer evenings and/or weekends where necessary

Practical information:

Locations will be agreed with the young person which means that volunteers will be able to manage this for maximum possible convenience. You won't be required to transport the young person as they will be independent travellers.

A 3 hour informal training session must be completed in-order to be signed off as a volunteer.

NYY also provides training and resources for both new and established clubs and adventurous activities for young people at Carlton Lodge Activity Centre.
