Life Skills and Employability Volunteers

Life Skills and Employability Volunteers
Disability Action Yorkshire
Description of the role:

Could you support us to provide new learning and employability and/or life skills opportunities for disabled people to help boost their independence and achieve their goals? Life Skills and Employability Volunteers can play a central role in learners’ progress by providing one-to-one support, but you will also be offered opportunities to support group learning and social activities.

Key Tasks:
To support learning activity taking place during your volunteering slot. (The content you are comfortable to support would be agreed with the Learning Support Team prior to you starting your volunteering).

To help staff to maintain a safe and secure leaning environment (full training given).

To promote a person-centred approach and positive image of disability.

You may be asked to assist learners to move between sites but staff would always be present.

To abide by Disability Action Yorkshire’s policies and procedures in particular around health and safety and safeguarding (full training given).

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

You will be given full training and ongoing support to carry out the role. We welcome and encourage volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds and no prior experience is necessary. The most important aspect of becoming a Life Skills and Employability Volunteer is an overall interest in empowering disabled people. Volunteers should have empathy with learners, and seek to fully understand their views and what is important in their lives. The qualities a volunteer might need are enthusiasm, friendliness, commitment and, above all, patience.

Practical information:

Ideally we would like you to commit to 2 hours per week, preferably on the same day to enable the Learning Support Team to plan.
