Description of the role:

The Witness service volunteer provides practical help,emotional support and information to witnesses so that they feel valued, respected, informed and able to give their best evidence in court. There is a witness service in every Crown and magistrates court in england and wales. The service is confidential and free. The service offers: A service which is free to witnesses, independent of the police, prosecution agencies and courts, and tailored to individual need. Someone to talk to in confidence (but not about the evidence in the case.) Information about court and legal processes. Emotional support in dealing with the impact and experience of attending Pre-trial visits for witnesses, so that they are familiar with the courtroom and the roles of the various people in court before they give their evidence. Support, in the courtroom if necessary, on the day of the trial Practical help, for example, with claiming expenses. Separate waiting areas for defence and prosecution where provided by the court. Liaison with other statutory or voluntary agencies about the case or related matters. Referral to other appropriate agencies during or after the trial. Additional support for witnesses who are vulnerable or intimidated.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

No experience necessary as full training will be given. We are currently looking for people who can provide this much needed service. You need to be over 18 and have: caring, empathetic and non-judgmental attitude availability to commit to 1 day per week / fortnight a willingness to learn and attend training events willingness to volunteer as a team

Practical information:

We will : provide comprehensive training ensure you have on going support pay your ‘out of pocket’ expenses e.g. travel
