Work base: Ripon Workhouse Museum
Hours: Part-time – 26 hours per week (0.70 full time). These hours can be worked flexibility across the week. Some evening and weekend work may be required

Job purpose, duties and responsibilities

This post will lead, develop and manage Ripon Museum Trust’s promotion and marketing activities. We have a well-established offer of three museums and an events programme covering law and order, social justice and poverty to promote to tourists from across the region and beyond. The Trust is a National Portfolio Organisation and uses Arts Council funding to increase our reach, deliver excellent programming and broaden our core demographics to deliver on Arts Council’s ‘Let’s Create Vision and Strategy 2020 – 2030.

The post holder will work strategically as part of the Senior Management Team to help shape content which drives visitation, responds to our key agenda and to ensure all our messaging is consistent and effective. The postholder is responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably and strategically. The post holder will be pivotal in generating relevant products, managing all our customer data, scanning the external environment, liaising with stakeholders, helping to develop our programmes, understanding and promoting our visitor business.

We know that our new Strategy, Vision and Mission gives us a great basis for creating compelling, engaging and topical programmes that could really ‘make waves’ and have impact locally, regionally and nationally. Marketing’s role in creating product will be by being ‘in at the start’, working across our whole organisation and feeding in ‘audience insight and data’ to the process, ensuring the programme we create resonates with target audiences and importantly is driving visits and sales.

The post-holder will be required to:

• Develop a strategic approach to creating clear and relevant marketing messages and, working with the senior management team, Trustees and volunteers, to generate product which resonates with our vision, our audiences and drives visitation

• Develop our annual Marketing Plan to ensure all our marketing is delivered in a joined up and effective manner with accompanying and underpinning campaign planning.

• Take an active role in all Business planning activity

• Utilise data and analytics being produced by the Trust to understand our current and potential audiences and to give us powerful insights into how we are reaching people and how we could reach them more effectively.

• Utilise Audience Finder data and other relevant analytics to shape our activities and report our performance as a National Portfolio Organisation to Arts Council England and to adopt new ways of working as they emerge.

• Lead a team on all marketing campaigns

• Oversee the management of our social media, website, leaflet, mailing list, blogs, newsletter

• In the event of a crisis (external and internal) oversee all messaging and manage the marketing and communications response.

• Build and maintain good relationships with local media outlets to ensure we get best possible media coverage.

• Build and maintain good relationships with local and regional tourism networks and bodies (Visit Ripon, Welcome to Yorkshire etc) to ensure we get best possible market intelligence support, profile and joint working.

• Build and maintain good relationships with Ripon City Council, Harrogate and District City Council, North Yorkshire County Council and other key stakeholders promoting the visitor economy to benefit Ripon Museum Trust.

• Work with the Volunteer and Operations Manager to target recruitment of new volunteers into the Trust and work with the Trust’s Volunteer Marketing Team to deliver excellent and cost effective marketing approaches

• Work with the Senior Management Team to market all products and programmes appropriately.

• Prepare reports for the Board and senior management team as required on progress

• Manage the budget lines delegated to the post

• Attend relevant exhibitions, fairs and other promotional events to represent and promote Ripon Museum Trust

Note: Notwithstanding the Job Purpose and Duties & Responsibilities included in this job description, the post-holder must be prepared to undertake additional tasks, duties and responsibilities at the request of the Director and that fall within the strategic objectives of the Ripon Museum Trust. There is a requirement to be available to work occasionally on the front line with visitors and on call, on a rota, with relevant training as appropriate.

Person Specification: Essential Desirable
Knowledge and Experience
Experience of working in a Marketing and Communications role
Experience of organising and delivering marketing and/or PR campaigns
Knowledge of the media sector in North Yorkshire and surrounding counties (primarily West Yorkshire and Teesside)
Experience of developing campaigns to access hard to reach or under engaged audiences and sections of the community
Experience of working to a limited budget
Experience of working in a heritage/museum and/or a cultural/arts organisation
Experience of working with Volunteers
Experience of managing a budget
Experience of working with CMS software
Experience of working with a till and in a customer facing role

Personal Skills
High standard of written English, able to state a case clearly and concisely and produce technical and non-technical reports for internal and external audiences
Ability to learn new IT systems swiftly and effectively
Ability to embody the values of the Trust (Ambition, Learning, Teamwork, Community, Fairness)
Excellent persuasive oral and presentational communication skills
Leadership qualities skills which challenge and support staff and volunteers in order to maximise team potential
