Job Description:

Hostel Worker (Homeless Charity)

Would you like a career where you support someone who is experiencing homelessness towards a life off the streets? Join the incredible team at Harrogate Homeless Project and make a difference in your local community.

Full training will be given. This opportunity would be ideal for anyone looking to develop their experience towards a career in mental health, the police, probation services and health and social care. It is also ideal for anyone who has had a career in these or similar sectors and now wants to use their skills in a different setting.

Changing the direction of people’s lives is very rewarding although it can be challenging too. At Harrogate Homeless Project you’ll be part of a very supportive team.

About us

Harrogate Homeless Project is a long established and highly regarded charity which exists to provide emergency shelter, safety and ongoing support to those experiencing homelessness so that they can move towards a life off the streets. What sets us apart is our passionate and committed team whose desire to make a difference has a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable single adults in our community.

As the only direct access hostel in the Harrogate District, we accept referrals from any agency as well as direct referrals from individuals in need of accommodation. Each resident is allocated a designated support worker who works alongside the resident towards achieving appropriate move on accommodation.

Services include:
• Springboard day centre offering hot food, laundry, showers, one to one support, counselling, psychotherapy, skills training, GP and health services.
• No Second Night Out emergency accommodation for those with nowhere to stay.
• 16-bed hostel for clients who are ready for a more structured journey towards life off the streets including mental health and addiction support.
• Move on accommodation for those who are ready to live independently but still need some support.
• SAFE, our Service for Adults Facing Exclusion, provides multi-agency support for people with multiple, complex needs, who have experienced entrenched homelessness and multiple exclusion from mainstream services.
• Streetlight is a flexible and innovative service provided for our clients by our staff psychotherapist. This is a vital element of the services we offer as many of the clients using our services have multiple complex needs and the waiting lists and criteria for mainstream services is a barrier to these people receiving the support they need.

The role

As hostel worker you will contribute to the smooth and safe running of the hostel environment during the day and evenings, providing assistance to residents and support workers as required and carrying out administrative tasks and health and safety duties as well as activities with residents.

You will often be the first point of contact for someone with nowhere to stay who is in need of our help. You will be required to follow our procedures to make sure that the best decisions are made for that person’s welfare and the wellbeing of our entire hostel community.

Hostel workers may be required to liaise with our partners in other services such as the NHS, local authority and local police. Full training will be provided.

This is a full-time post worked over a rolling rota, working 4 shifts on followed by 4 shifts off. Shifts are worked between the hours of 0700 – 1700 and 1400 – midnight.

Please note that the hostel operates 365 days a year and the Hostel Worker rota will therefore include weekend and bank holiday working, including periods of lone working.

Salary £18,156 per annum.

Key Information

• No Experience is needed as you will receive full training and comprehensive induction.
• Certified training in First Aid, Fire Marshall training and additional recognised training to support your work with vulnerable people.
